How to choose a good breeder con't
Every kennel must breed litters to maintain their bloodlines. They will keep one or two puppies from a litter and then sell the remaining puppies to good homes. Some breeders may become very competitive with one another. Do not allow yourself to get caught-up in gossip. A good breeder does not need to put-down their competition. However if they are confident and honest, they may try to steer you away from trouble. It will be up to you to research any claims and to decide what is, or isn't true.

A Dobermann that has not met its minimum health requirements should never be used for breeding. Do not even consider any excuses for this neglect! The minimum screening done by some breeders are hips and vWd. There are many other tests that are available to us to help screen and protect our bloodlines. These would include; Heart, thyroid, eyes, DNA testing for vWd, hips, and in some areas spinal tests are available, but not common.

How many dogs does the breeder have on the premises and how many different breeds? A breeder with dozens of dogs and numerous different breeds is usually not breeding with yours, or the dogís best interest in mind. This sort of breeder should be completely avoided.

Puppy Mills are multiple dog breeders, or dog farms. They supply Pet Stores with any popular breed of puppy. These puppies have been bred under inferior conditions. You can never know what sort of trouble you are getting with a Pet Shop puppy!

There are many articles and research findings on Puppy Mills if you search the web.Ask where the puppies are whelped? Inside the home is the best option for anyone wanting a Dobermann as a family pet.

How is the ear cropping performed? This should be done through, or by a veterinarian, and the puppy should be placed under an Anesthetic.

Your breeder should offer you a minimum 2-year guarantee against genetic health disorders. However, 5 years would be more preferable. Lifetime guarantees are usually not realistic and should be reviewed carefully.

Ultimately you should choose a breeder that you can fundamentally agree with. They should be breeding for the reasons that you personally agree with and relate to. Most importantly you should feel that you can turn to them for help at any time and know that they are qualified to assist you.
Upon viewing a litter of puppies, they should be plump and healthy looking. They should not try to hide, or scream, if you gently pick them up while they are awake. The breeder should be able to show you health certificates for the pups and the parents.

Once you have decided on your breeder and puppy, bring your new pup to the vet right away for a check-up.

I hope this will help you in your search for a Dobermann puppy. I remember when I was the one searching for a puppy and understand how confusing it can become.
